The Grapefruit Diet Plan: Fad or Truth?

Have you ever heard of the Grapefruit Diet? This diet has been used for

It is also known as the "Hollywood Diet". It is also erroneously called the Mayo Clinic Diet.

If you are like me, then you've tried your fair share of diet plans only to gain the weight right back.

And if you are anything like me, then you never stop looking. I ran into the grapefruit diet while searching for diet plans online. After doing a little research, I have to say that there might be something to this.

It seems that the grapefruit has a few secret ingredients.  Researchers are actually trying to isolate this secret compound so that they can make a diet pill out of it.  I will talk about this compound in a minute.

It is a chemical known as naringenin, which is described as a flavonoid found in citrus fruit. It has a revolutionary effect on the liver making it burn fat instead of storing it after a meal.

The grapefruit is also filled with special enzymes that is believed to control insulin.

When you combine eating a grapefruit with protein, the combination helps to regulate insulin levels and boosts metabolism.  The diet plan is laid out so that you consume 1/2 a grapefruit at every meal and  eat lots of fruits and vegetables.

The 2nd ingredient is: Citric Acid- has an alkaline reaction in the body. (Even though it is an acid) This alkalizes the body and helps to fight off disease.

The 3rd ingredient is: Pectin- This is a soluble fibre that helps to lower cholesterol.

The 4th ingredient is: Lycopene- This is a very, very, powerful antioxidant that boosts the immune system and helps to prevent cancer.

The 5th ingredient is: quinine- Great for fighting off fevers, it also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Used alot in the treatment of malaria.

All of these ingredients make the grapefruit a very powerful diet food.

I've listed a sample meal plan for the grapefruit diet below. The key is to eat the fruit with a meal and Avoid "white carbohydrates" such as pastas or white bread.

Grapefruit Diet Breakfast Menu :

  • 2 eggs boiled

  • 2 slices of Turkey bacon

  • 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar

Grapefruit Diet Lunch Menu :

  • 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar

  • Salad

  • Grass Fed meat, free range chicken, or wild caught fish in any amount.

Grapefruit Diet Dinner Menu :

  • 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar

  • Salad with or a red or green vegetable sauteed in butter or spices.

  • Meat or Wild Caught Fish cooked any way.

  • Organic Coffee or Tea (1 cup)

Bedtime Snack :

  • 6 oz cup of raw milk.

 

Overall, this is a good plan to do if you need to drop some weight rapidly. It is not a good idea to use this diet for the long term because there isn't enough nutrition in it.
